Two to three times a year our kids' elementary school has parents come in and meet with each teacher. It's a time for the teacher to go over assessments they've completed and report on how the students are progressing. Tonight was first grade and third grade, Joselyn and Griffin, respectively. We missed Kindergarten (Layla) last week due to the Blue and Gold Banquet. Our kids are doing well. They all need to work more on reading, which is no surprise to us but gives us ideas and motivation to help them do more reading and fewer electronics.
Some tips were to have a designated time devoted to reading. Any type of reading- novels/chapter books, graphic novels, short stories, scriptures, etc. Also, to have a reading spot. I'm not sure where we'd put a reading spot in our house right now, but having our one hour of no screen time in the afternoons will definitely help with devoted reading time.
Brianna went to school today after missing Tuesday because of her ear infection and doctor's appointment. I got a text from her teacher about halfway through her day saying Brianna had complained about her ear hurting a couple times and didn't seem like she was feeling well- the cuddling in Ms. Melissa's lap and crying during story time may have clued her in. I had just finished at the gym and made my way there. By the time I got there she seemed to be a little down, but they were starting an art project and perked up a bit. I asked her if she wanted to finish her art project or go home and she chose art. Since I was there I helped out a bit and got a chance to chat with her teacher a little on how life was for her (her husband just got deployed). By the time art time was finished she was just fine or seemed that way. I ended up taking her home early anyway and we just spent a quiet afternoon resting.

Things with Kyra and her friend who is a boy are remaining steady. She keeps trying to arrange things to do together- park, McDonald's, mall- but disguise it some by inviting Addy and the boy's sister, who is also a friend of Addy's. We keep telling her no BECAUSE THAT IS STILL A DATE. But she doesn't see it that way, it's just hanging out. They are spending WAY too much time texting and video chatting with each other. This is going to change soon. She's completely disconnected from the family because she's on her phone texting or surfing apps. Not only is she disconnected, but when we are graced with her presence and attention she's irritable and snippy with everyone.
We've been remiss on how much time we've let the kids be on electronics, so a hard reset is about to hit them all. Ideally, I'd like to have them have a total of an hour screen time during the week and up to two on the weekends, but I'm not sure how realistic that is for us. We definitely need to reinstitute our one hour no screen time in the afternoons as a start.
