JESUS WANTS ME FOR A SUNBEAM...SO MY LIGHT CAN SHINE!

Last Sunday's post I forgot to mention that Brianna is a Sunbeam!!! It's crazy to think that I don't have any more kids in Nursery or kids I'm impatiently waiting to enter Nursery. All my kids are in Primary or in the Youth Program.

I have been really enjoying the Come, Follow Me program so far. It has given me the motivation to really study my scriptures verse by verse as I learn and prepare to teach my little primary class. Today we learned about Matthew 1 and Luke 1, the announcement by the angel Gabriel to Zacharias that he and his wife were going to have a baby, John the Baptist. His appearance to Mary telling them her she would be the mother to Jesus Christ. And his appearance to Joseph to reassure him to marry Mary and to raise Jesus.

My class ranges in abilities, but they are all still 6-year-olds, so I made visuals to help them "see" the story and hopefully have it be more interesting than just reading a bunch of scriptures. And I gotta tell ya- 20-minute lesson times are a double edge sword. One side- YAY! short class time, the other side- Oh, no! Short class time. I think I could have easily filled my class time with the old 45-minute class, but I think it worked out nicely. Here are the drawings I made for my class.

Here's the whole scene. The angel Gabriel up in Heaven having his face to face with God. Mary and Joseph in Nazareth, where they each are visited by the angel Gabriel. And Zacharias working in the temple and his wife, Elisabeth in Jerusalem, or nearby.

Other than the obvious picture of the ancient temple I drew these (not traced). It was really nice to be able to move things around as the angel visited each person and as Mary went to see Elisabeth. I hope that it helped bring the story alive for the kids and to allow them to see the miracles happening in the Lord's time to make it all work.

And as a fun sidenote: Ryan was my "extra man" in class today. We don't often cross paths in Primary since he is in Senior Primary and I'm in Junior Primary, but it worked out today and it was fun having him with me today.

We are still feeling the growing pains of the family side of "Come, Follow Me". We haven't worked out our groove just yet on getting the kids to work on their daily scripture study. They seem to do it without much murmuring when reminded, but we don't really have a good schedule on it yet. So we've ended up doing a cram session Saturday night. That way they at least have an idea of what they're going to talk about in class the next day.

Our bishop has been working overtime the last couple weeks doing interviews and catching up with the new updates affecting the youth. Today Kyra and Addy had their turn and when they got home they were both carrying shiny, new temple recommends. They are both so excited and Addy is especially excited since she's been looking forward to going to the temple for several years now.

We also had Addy's Temple Prep class today. The Primary did a fabulous job teaching them about the importance of the temple and also had some of the older Youth come in and talk about the temple and their experiences. Brother Breinholt, the second counselor in the bishopric, spoke about lighting their "fire". They use fire to stay warm, to cook, and even to destroy, but he wanted to talk about letting their "fire" give light. It is up to them what they do with their "fire". They can tend it, make it grow, or let it go out. But it is important that they let their "fires" burn brightly and going to the temple will help. Very well done. I think Addy is ready for her first temple trip in February.
