EASTER- 2016

Somehow, someway Easter ALWAYS sneaks up on me and this year was no different. It didn’t help that our weekend ended up being JAM-PACKED with activities.
  • Ryan had a boy scout campout- Friday night to Saturday afternoon
  • Layla had a birthday party to go to- Saturday morning.
    • We bought the gift(s) that morning
  • We played at the park during Layla’s party since there was a neighborhood get-together (a post on this here)
  • Kim went shopping for Easter once Ryan got home
  • Ryan had to run an errand
  • Hard boil the eggs
  • Griffin had a birthday party to go to- Saturday evening
  • Mom, Kyra, and Addy went to the General Woman’s meeting at the church Saturday night
  • Get ready and go to church
  • Dye eggs
  • Hunt for eggs
  • Feed the missionaries
  • Have Family Home Evening
Needless to say, we were running behind for the Easter bunny. We didn’t get eggs dyed until after church, which meant the Easter bunny did not come by to hide all the eggs in time for the kids to hunt before church. Which ended up being fine, because we all slept in and just barely got ready for and to church on time, OK a few minutes late.
(Just a note on the eggs- Since even I don’t love egg salad so much to hard boil SIX DOZEN EGGS, we buy four dozen plastic eggs, fill them with treats- candy, change, etc., and hard boil and dye only two dozen. The kids still get to find a dozen each and we don’t have a year’s supply of egg salad.)
We do a family Easter basket. Mostly because it gets really expensive really fast to fill up six individual baskets with chocolate and goodies. This way we all get a little sweet something each and then, as a family, we can enjoy the contents of the basket. This year the kids got bubbles, sidewalk chalk, notebooks to draw/write in at church, crayons and activity books, also for church use. The basket is not from the Easter bunny, but from mom and dad, so they were able to use their goodies at church that day. It kept them busy and quiet during sacrament meeting, so…success!
Dying eggs on Sunday was a nice way to spend our afternoon. It kept the kids busy and filled up the lull between church/lunch and dinner/FHE. We found a fun egg dying kit where it was shallow pools so you get a mosaic design by dying only part of the shell at a time. Kyra and Addy really enjoyed this one but were a little bummed they only dyed a few eggs to the other kids dying eggs with whole colors in the regular dye kit.
Since we were off our game, Addy being the smart and sharp minded kid she is kind of figured out who the Easter bunny really is. It was a nice opportunity to talk with her about how the Easter bunny and eggs and egg hunts are fun, but Easter is really a day we celebrate Christ’s resurrection and how it was the last step needed to be fulfilled so we can return to live with our Heavenly Father. We have a strong suspicion Kyra’s figured it out too, but enjoys the magic of the holidays too much to ask about it.
Once the eggs were dyed we sent the kids upstairs to play while the Easter bunny hid all the eggs. Now that ALL SIX DOZEN EGGS were strategically placed around the house for the various finding skill levels, the hunt was on!
Very quickly after our egg hunt, it was time to feed the missionaries! We love feeding the missionaries and try to feed them every month. I appreciate the patience the missionaries have with my extra crazy kids and the example they set about going on a mission. Since it was Easter and we ended up with THREE hams over Christmas, we went all out and cooked up our last ham. We also had funeral potatoes, veggies, fruit, and rolls. It was so yummy!
For Activity Days the previous Wednesday, Addy made a fun Easter themed Family Home Evening Lesson. It was 12 plastic eggs, each filled with an object that represents Christ’s death and/or resurrection and a scripture to explain the object. Each kid got a chance to choose an egg, find the object inside and mom or dad read the scripture to go along with the object. It was a great way to end our Easter weekend, even if the kids were a lot crazy with all the happenings we had going on that day.

CHIRST LIVES!!!  HAPPY EASTER!
