Book "give away" on Oprah

Ok, I know for all of our faithful readers it's been FOREVER since our last update. Rest assured I am working on that. But for now I wanted to get the word out, especially to those who read our blog that I don't have email address for. So if you got my email about this you don't have to read this, if you didn't then this entry is for you!!

Hey all,

I just watched a very moving Oprah show of a woman who came home one day to find her husband had committed suicide leaving her with $10,000 a month in household expenses, massive credit card debt and no life insurance for himself (he canceled it 3 months prior to committing suicide). The moral of the whole story is for women to not put themselves into a position where they are 1) clueless of the family finances and 2) have a way to take care of yourself if you find yourself in a position where your husband isn't around (divorce, death, injury, etc.)

As usual Oprah gave the members of her audience a book written by Suze Orman titled "Women and Money:..." she has also made it available to home viewers on her website (click the link for Suze's book give away once on Oprah's website). While I personally find Suze Orman a bit annoying, she knows her stuff when it comes to money and facing the hard facts pertaining to ones personal finances. From now until tomorrow night (2/14) at 8/7pm Central time you can down load the complete book in PDF format. She (in her book and on the show) challenges women, in particular, but families to get your affairs in order, know what your finances are, and make a plan for the unthinkable so you can function if the unthinkable happens.

Mostly why I felt like sharing with you all is my younger sister (being the good example that she is) and her husband just set themselves up with life insurance, drafted a living will and a last will and testament. That got me thinking too about the "what if's" of life. Since it is also tax return season (yea!!!) and, hopefully, all of you will be receiving some funds back from the good ol' IRS to take some of that and get your ducks in a row, if you haven't already.

I have been asked many times why I decided to get a Master's degree to "just" stay home and be a mom. My answer to them is always just in case the unthinkable happens I have a means to support myself and my children. While I hope to never be in that situation at least I have that net to fall back on. The woman on the show did not have that net. She was clueless about the state of the families finances, clueless as to what it takes to keep the (financial) household running, clueless that her husband had set in motion events to leave her completely destitute with 4 children. She is now working, with help from family and friends, to get back on her feet and be free from the mess she was oblivious to prior to his passing.

Pass on the news...if you'd like, to family and friends. It never hurts to be prepared...just in case.
