To-ma-to, To-mah-to

To-mA-to, to-mah-to. No matter how you say it, Kyra can no longer eat them. We have known for a while that Kyra might be allergic to tomatoes, but now we are about 99% certain.

We ate a yummy dinner of spaghetti Friday evening. We didn't think anything of it at the time and happily went on with our evening routine. We all went to bed and Kyra then preceded to wake up a half dozen times throughout the night. Ryan and I were getting increasingly frustrated that she wouldn't stay asleep. Not to mention increasingly tired. We usually go into her room (with the lights still off) and put her back in bed.

The next morning I notice that she has large red areas on her body. After closer inspection it looked like something was biting her repeatedly. She had multiple bite looking welts per red area. I figure maybe a spider or some ants may have gotten to her while she slept and that's why she woke up so many times. I checked out her bed, nothing. I then notice that after an hour or so the red areas would disappear and reappear again later in a different spot.

It then dawns on me that we had spaghetti the night before and Kyra's allergy may be moving to a new level. Up until then her face would get red where ever the spaghetti sauce touched it. We figured it was the acidity burning her skin and left it at that. We mentioned it to the doctor, a while ago, and she said it may be an allergy.

Her allergy, we believe to tomatoes, has moved from slight redness on her face to full blown HIVES!!! I start to freak out a bit and pull out the camera to document it in case we need to go to the doctor. I also send Ryan to the pharmacy, with Kyra in tow, to get some Benadryl. The Benadryl helped until it wore off and then the hives came right back with a vengeance.

On Sunday we went to a friend's wedding. They had a lovely variety of treats to snack on throughout the reception. The kids were invited as well and so we went and feasted. Kyra loves, Loves, LOVES tomatoes! So in an effort to keep her out of trouble (raiding the snack table unaccompanied) we got her a plate of all her favorite snacks: cheese, grapes, crackers, bread, and, yes, tomatoes. We were a little stressed keeping her near us and out of everyone else's hair that we forgot. She was also pretty hive free all day. But sure enough within an our or two she was nearly coved in angry, itchy hives once again. We make our exit to go home because we didn't bring the Benadryl with us.

We medicate her and put her to bed. She sleeps better that night and wakes up nearly hive free. I call the doctor to ask about what I can give her or do to help alleviate them until the tomatoes are out of her system. The nurse I was talking to set us up an appointment for later that afternoon. I was tempted to cancel the appointment and was going to do so after her nap if she was still not having a problem. Well, she wakes up again covered. I was going to try to not give her anything for the hives so the doctor could see them, but she was so itchy that I couldn't do that to her.

I call Ryan to inform him that we are taking an adventure to the doctor's office and if he could possibly leave a little early to join me , I would appreciate it. (I hate taking both kids to the doctor by myself. I do it when I have to, but I'd rather not have to if I can avoid it.)

"Huh? The doctor?!? I hate going there! They give me SHOTS! IT MAKES ME CRY!!!"

"Oh, Kyra is seeing the doctor?! OK, then lets roll!"

So I pack the kids up and head on out. Ryan calls right before I get there to tell me he had locked his keys in the car (more to come on that in a future posting) and that he needed me to swing by. We were unusually early, so I stop by, pick him up and head to the doctor. The kids were both very well behaved while we waited. We got into the exam room and Kyra still didn't have a hive on her. Thankfully I had taken those pictures Saturday because the medicine was still working when we saw the doctor. I hate it when I take my kids to the doctor for something and they are miraculously better during that specific time span. It makes me look like I'm an idiot and just crying wolf. After a brief summery of the events over the weekend the doctor suggests that we get an allergy panel done on Kyra, but she's pretty sure that we are right and it's the tomatoes that are causing it.

We will keep you posted on the results when we go to the allergist.
